Reminds me of those "Kill Your TV" bumperstickers.
Linford Detweiler, by the way, is one half of the group Over the Rhine, a folk band that Elise and I used to be big fans of. We got his little upstart journal in an exclusive CD called "Besides" (which is their B-sides record). I pulled it off the shelf the other day and some stuff. Quite good actually. He is something of a writer. Anyway, I found that line about television, and liked it so much that I just had to put it on my website.

we cut cable off about 5 months ago. mostly because avery was starting to babysit for us, so monitering their tv watching was going to be more difficult.
plus, i saw "the corporation" last year, and they showcased a lot of statistics about tv and advertising, and children, and presented it in such a fatalistic way, as if to say "there is no way to stop the inundation and desensitization of our children by the onslaught of the media through television programming"
and something inside me said "just do it. cancel cable."
so we did.
